Malmaison Hotel Edinburgh – Edinburgh – Scotland – UK and Eire
We were part of a big group of people who traveled to Edinburgh to spend a couple of nights celebrating a friends 50th birthday. About 16 of us stayed here with others staying at other hotels in the Leith area. Six of us arrived around 12:30 on Saturday. Went in to bar & had a round. Next round they ran out of Guinness & did not know if they would be getting any more?
Rooms very colorful but very basic & very small, not even a small table & chair. No biscuits, limited tea & coffee. Toilet seat loose & sink very slow to drain away. French window to juliet balcony would not shut properly. TV very old style with limited channels. But I must say the bed was very comfortable.
Location is excellent & parking is free, although it is a little confusing which door should be used to enter the hotel. The only food we had in the hotel was breakfast & it was diabolical. The “Big Mal Breakfast” consisted of: 1 Sausage (Very well pre-cooked), 1 Rasher of part cooked bacon, 1 small slice of black pudding, 1 well boiled medium sized mushroom, 1/2 a burnt tomato, & a fried egg that was unbelievably crispy around the edges whilst not being fully cooked in the middle.
I asked for extra toast as it was needed. Sauce had to be requested & came in the original bottle. The staff in the Bistro were unbelievably miserable & not welcoming at all. As a salesman I have frequented many hotels in many different places within the UK & Europe & believe that a good benchmark for a reasonably good hotel would be Premier Travel Inn or Holiday Inn (Express).
This place did not come close to either & at £139.50 per room per night was over twice the price. Would we stay here again? If it was free maybe I would consider it but I believe my future stays will be with a guaranteed good hotel.
