Kaan Apartments - Marmaris - Turkey
On arrival at the Kaan Apartments we were told that our pre- booked ground floor apartment would not be available till the next morning. We were taken to a pokey little studio on the 4th floor which had a 60 degree sloped roof. We both banged our heads within minutes.
Next morning we were moved to room 204 (2nd floor). What a nightmare. The noise is constant so if you are unable to sleep at night you can’t catch up with a lie-in. We put up with this room for maybe 4 nights. We demanded a quieter room or help to get home. Our 3rd room was on the 3rd floor & was quieter, but we could still hear arguments etc, coming from the bar.
We noticed that staff were unable to maintain a polite service. It often appeared that they were angry or indifferent with us. We realised that we weren’t spending enough cash at the hotel & we were always questioned as to where we were going.
The staff had obviously checked my passport & noticed my birthday was a couple of days away. Mario got very excited & said to the chef that a cake was needed. Chef nodded & Mario started to juggle his ice cubes etc, while grinning manically. My birthday came & we had already made our plans for the evening but they started phoning the room & screaming my name from the bar. We had a quick drink in the bar before leaving to go clubbing & we were subject to questioning about what we were doing. They were upset that I wasn’t spending the evening in the bar & they nagged until we agreed to go there the next evening.
We duly went down the next eve & following a very nice meal I was presented with a birthday cake with a sparkler stuck in the middle of it. Rambo asked if he should give everyone some & I nodded yes. (i’m not much of a cake fan) and everything seemed very pleasant until I asked for the bill & was very amused to find I had been billed for the cake! This was taking advantage in it’s lowest form. I refused to pay for a cake I didn’t request, got offered free drinks if I paid but the drinks are not very strong & I knew they would be 1% alcohol & 99%juice/pop.
The next day we were ignored completely by all of the staff except Rambo. Dirty looks came our way & no-one had a pleasant word for us. This went on for 3 more days & I finally asked if someone’s wages had been docked to pay for the cake. Rambo said “no” but if I felt bad, I should put the price of the cake in the tip box. We decided to sit back & watch how things went before we did this. It was a wise move. Things went from bad to good to bad again & obviously we didn’t tip as rambo suggested.
The staff like to get involved with the guests. We could tell who was involved with whom & it was amusing to see the staff move onto other guests once their current partner flew home. I had first hand experience of ‘hassle’ when 3 different members of staff hit on me individually & suggested I should go with them to one of the hotel rooms. I declined. In fact they scared me so much that that night I pushed both suitcases up against my room door & put the one sharp knife under my pillow. That night our phone in the bedroom rang on & off, which really creeped us out.
Things got so bad that my companion refused to exit/enter via the usual door & would nip down the fire escape to avoid the interogation. Other guests also started to follow suit & they too were experiencing similar things to us.
Some Positive comments: The mattresses are excellent quality & look brand new. Very comfortable. The food is also really good & well presented & was reasonably priced.
This hotel is, without doubt, the worst I have ever stayed in. I have serious concerns about it’s safety & would not recommend it to anyone. Even the fire escape is loose & leads to a very uneven & badly maintained path. Every room we stayed in was run-down & in poor condition. The taps exploded every time & then stayed on constant drip. The hot water supply is very poor & we often had to have cold showers. The fixtures & fittings were hanging off the walls & plug sockets and didn’t always have fronts on. The kettle didn’t switch itself off & only one ring on the -hob worked. (it was also situated right next to the exploding taps). The curtains are not big enough to cover the windows & the metal kick plates at the bottom of the doors were hanging off.
Do yourself a favour & choose your hotel very carefully. We found that for an extra £70 each we could have had a luxurious apartment in a beautiful hotel closer to the town centre.
Lesson learned.
