Anassa Hotel – Skala – Kefalonia

The Anassa Hotel in Skala on the beautiful Island of Kefalonia is a wonderful hotel. We stayed here for two weeks in a self catering apartment allocated a round floor room with a side view of the sea & a spacious terrace set in the grounds.

The hotel is a small family-run concern & their pride in providing a relaxing comfortable holiday is very obvious. The building is spotless & the gardens well maintained & loved. The owners & their family are visible & sort out any niggles straight away. This is not the place to go if you want 24 hour reception & room service but you can always find someone to help you, be it to book a taxi or get another chair for the terrace.

Air con was effective & worth it at 40 euro a week. Towels & linen are changed twice weekly but if you wanted you could pay a small supplement for a daily change while a safe costs around 18 euro. The room was a fair size with comfortable beds & a big bathroom with a powerful shower (for Greece) & twin sinks. There was plenty of hot water whatever time you showered but the bathroom was more of a wetroom & could get a bit slippery but this was not an issue for us.

Although self catering I never “catered”. I think if you intended to cook it could be a bit small & the equipment is limited, but there is a kettle, toaster & full sized fridge which was all we needed. The hotel provides breakfast if you want it, ranging from “buffet” to full English. Tried it once & it was very good. There is an extensive snack menu served until around 5pm with all the usual stuff like rolls, toasties, salads, pizzas and a good range of Greek food, freshly made & with massive portions.

The location is fabulous, 10 minutes easy walk from the centre of Skala (there is a bit of a hill once you reach the village but a minute further along there are steps if needed). The hotel has a reasonably sized infinity pool overlooking the sea & a smaller pool which is also a Jacuzzi. Sunbeds are new, comfortable & in sufficient quantity – we could get 3 together at any time – and they have nice big parasols.

The beach is pebble / shingle & shelves quickly but there is good snorkeling. The sea taxi & glass bottom boat stop directly in front of the Anassa. All the hotel staff were friendly & seemed to share the same love & commitment shown by the owners, from the cleaning staff to the young girl who works in the snack bar, always smiling.

On arrival you are taken to the bar for a drink of your choice & to relax before being taken to your room.
We tried many cocktail bars in Skala BUT the best cocktails were made by Hercules who runs the bar. He makes the BEST Margaritas I have had, without a doubt.

Regards entertainment, we only stayed in for the BBQ/Greek night which was great fun. They do offer other entertainment including a big screen poolside for films/ football & music evenings. There is also Internet access available in reception and we bought 24 hrs worth for 10 euros. There are two PC’s available that my girls never had any issue in accessing. There is a flat screen TV in the bedrooms with limited UK channels.

If you want a peaceful hotel with friendly staff near a lively (but not loud) resort then Anassa in Skala is the place for you. I would return in a heartbeat!
